Crisis in Crimea

The situation in Ukraine remains highly volatile with the US threatening further sanctions against Russia if the upcoming referendum in Crimea is used to legitimise Russian involvement in the region. The West views Crimea as an integral part of Ukraine and argues that the referendum is an attempt by Russian president Vladimir Putin to annex the Crimea.

Putin's alleged aggression is depicted in the West as being in sharp contrast to Glasnost that was Kremlin policy under Mikhail Gorbachev prior to the break up of the Soviet Union.
