Just saw the article on your project in the latest Heritage Council newsletter & went browsing. Along the way I spotted something in negative A474/98508-09869 

The “Kilkenny Hurler” in the centre of the photo (holding his hurley horizontally) is an interloper!!  He is in fact an well-known English actor, John Gregson, who was given special permission to take part in the parade as part of a feature film called “Rooney” (based on a novel by Catherine Cookson).  The parade then features in the film.

Hope that this is of some use.

I received this email yesterday from Donal.  I just love when people email to inform me of a mistake made in our captioning or to give me a little bit more information! 

They are seldom as interesting as this one though!  How cool that this ‘Kilkenny Player’ from the 1957 All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final (Waterford vs. Kilkenny) is actually the actor John Gregson! Love even more that his hurley is so sparkly and new - not that I had noticed it as odd until Donal brought this image to my attention!
