Health Hike

Aviva Health Insurance is to increase its health premium by almost 13% from March. The company has blamed the rise on factors such as the change in the cost of a public health bed.

Alison Burns, the CEO said that:

The Government and the industry need to work together to find ways of keeping young people in the market. Unless we have young and healthy members to share the cost of the higher claims of older members, premiums will continue to rise.

With Health Minister James Reily under fire for the poor state of the country's public health system, any influx of patients no longer able to afford insurance in the private sector is likely to add to the government's woes.
